Pay more at AIIMS from next week

Rates for private wards in All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) are going to increase by 50 to 100 per cent in coming days. An official order has been circulated to this effect on Tuesday.

New rates will be implemented from October 15. According to the circular, the AIIMS governing body had approved the increased rates in its meeting held two years ago on November 27, 2010. The standing finance committee of the hospital has recently implemented it.

Faculty members said the increase is not in the interest of the patients. According to the circular issued by the AIIMS director Dr D K Sharma, the rate of deluxe room class A has been increased from Rs 1,800 per day to Rs 3,000 per day. Rate of general rooms (class B) will increase from Rs 1,200 a day to Rs 1,800.

Not only this, the advance amount will also have to be submitted for 10 days instead of one week from now on. Thus, the patients will have to submit Rs 32,000 for class A room and Rs 22,000 for class B room.

Diet charges

Diet charges have also been increased from Rs 100 to Rs 200. If relatives ask for the diet, charges will be Rs 300.

AIIMS administration said the decision is by the finance committee. A senior faculty member of the hospital said this move is beyond one’s understanding. It is surprising that the rates are applicable to the same private ward which was to be demolished and reconstructed till few weeks ago.

“The administration had said the new private ward needs to be demolished because it was beyond repair. Only after a question was raised in the Parliament and reports came out in the media, the decision to renovate was postponed. Now rates for the same have been increased. What is the logic behind this?” he said.

AIIMS has two private wards. One has 60 rooms while the other has close to 100 rooms.
