April-Sept tax mop-up grows to 5.9 pc

India’s gross tax collection in the first six months (April-September) of the fiscal year grew by a mere 5.9 per cent, still a far cry from the annual target of 15 per cent increase in the tax mop-up for 2012-13.

The corporate tax collection was even lower at just 1.60 per cent in the period under review, reflecting the despondency within India Inc over the current economic scenario. The direct tax collection figures released by the finance ministry on Wednesday showed the gross direct tax collection during April-September 2012-13 was Rs 2.72 lakh crore from Rs 2.57 lakh crore in the corresponding period last year.
