Builder forgets emblem man of Belgaum's cynosure

The Suvarna Soudha structure has won the admiration of one and all for the brilliant execution of the construction work.

The Ashoka Sthambha, the national emblem, has also been created and placed at the summit of the main dome of the building, much to the satisfaction of everyone. But Vishveshwaraiah Tulajaram Naindrakar, who moulded the bronze structure, has been made to run from pillar to post for three months now to get his dues, by B G Shirke Construction Technology Pvt Ltd, the Pune-based builders of the Suvarna Soudha.

Naindrakar has accomplished the task of making and placing the 12.07-foot-tall multi-metal emblem on top of the dome in three and half months, earlier than the deadline. The artist has not been invited to Thursday’s inauguration of the Soudha, let alone being enlisted for felicitation by the President. The work order was issued on April 4 and he finished work on the emblem and placed it atop the Soudha dome on July 23.

As per the terms and conditions of the Shirkes, the entire amount of Rs 70.56 lakh should have been paid after the emblem was erected and duly certified by the PWD. But even three months after all the formalities, he is yet to get the dues of Rs 25.5 lakh. So far, he has received only Rs 45 lakh in three instalments.

“I had invested huge money and skills in the job. But the Shirkes have been evading me. They are not giving a proper response. On the contrary, they are threatening me, if I insist for payment,” said the lower primary school dropout. He has been writing letters, e-mailing and calling up those concerned, but in vain.

“I was told that I will be invited for the inaugural function. But that has not happened,” Naindrakar said, pleading help to get his dues.

According to the terms and conditions, 70 per cent of the payment was to be released after the material was received at the site, 15 per cent after the structural work and the rest after erection of the emblem and inspection by PWD. Naindrakar’s work has come in for praise, but the Shirkes have not kept their word.
