DTC driver rams bus into tree as brakes fail, 15 hurt

In order to save passengers after the brakes of a DTC bus failed, the driver rammed the vehicle into a tree on Wednesday. However, 15 persons, including four women, were injured, police said.

The incident happened at 9.30 am in front of Batra Hospital traffic intersection in south-east Delhi’s Sangam Vihar.

The Delhi Transport Corporation bus was plying on route number 463 from Lajpat Nagar to Khanpur.

Bus driver Hari Kishan, realising that the brakes were not working at the traffic intersection, where the red light had just turned on, he rammed the bus into a tree.

The bus was carrying 15 passengers. Kishan was also injured due to the impact. “I suddenly realised that the brakes were not working and the traffic lights were red. A few vehicles had also stopped at the intersection. Then I saw a tree by the roadside, and all I thought was if I can ram the bus into the tree, the vehicle can be stopped. Then I turned the bus towards the tree,” Kishan said.

All the 15 passengers were taken to different hospitals, from where they were discharged after first-aid. “No one was seriously injured,” said a police officer.

On how the brakes had failed, DTC spokesperson Sharat Kumar said, “We are investigating the incident.”
