JOIN USGlobal award for Palike's property project
The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is ranked first among the 90 cities in the world by an international organisation for good practices in e-governance, especially in allotting Unique Property Identity Number (UPID) to all the properties through the Geographic Information System (GIS).
Mayor D Venkatesh Murthy told mediapersons here on Friday that the World e-Governments Organisation of Cities and Local Governments (WeGO), a Korea-based organisation has chosen the Palike in the best e-government efficiency category for the first WeGo Awards-2012.
The award will be presented during the second General Assembly of the WeGO scheduled for November 12 and 13 at Barcelona, Spain.
The Mayor of Seoul, Won Soon Park, who is also the President of the WeGO, has asked Murthy to make a presentation on the winning project.
The award has come as a shot in the arm for the Palike’s ongoing drive to provide the UPID through the GIS. The WeGO is an international co-operative body for cities and local governments.
It encourages sustainable development through e-governance by fostering collaborations among e-governing cities, bringing in efficiency and transparency in public administration, said the Mayor.
Former Taxation and Finance Committee chairperson Manjunath Raju, who played a pivotal role in implementing the GIS-based UPID in the City, said of the 90 cities that sent their municipal reports on implementation of e-governance, only 59 were shortlisted for a competition on e-governance. Among them, Bangalore was ranked first, added Raju.
He further said that with the GIS-based property identification drive, the Palike could enhance the tax revenue from Rs 760 crore in 2010-11 to Rs 1,200 crore in the last fiscal.
“This year we aim at generating at least Rs 1,800 crore. If the GIS is implemented with the digitised Road History, we would be able to generate at least Rs 2,500 crore,” he said.
