A 39-year-old man has been sent to jail for the rest of his life by a Delhi court for beating to death his wife who was also harassed by her in-laws for money.

The court, which said that the offence falls in the category of ‘rarest case’, made it clear that the convict would not be entitled for any remission. The court observed that wife beating is the worst kind of domestic violence inflicted on a woman and no civilised society can tolerate it.

“For the offence under section 302(punishment for murder) of the IPC, the convict is sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for life - till the rest of his life with the directions that he shall not be considered for any remissions,” an additional sessions judge said.

Apart from Delhi-based Manoj, the court also held his mother, brother and sister-in-law guilty of harassing victim Anita, who was a nurse in Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, and sentenced them to three years of imprisonment.

A fine of Rs 1.25 lakh was imposed on Manoj and Rs 25,000 on each of his three family members. According to the prosecution, Anita had married Nangloi resident Manoj in 2001 after the death of her first husband and all the four accused used to treat her cruelly and harass her for money.

On April 28, 2007, the victim was brought to RML Hospital by Manoj with injures all over her body and was declared brought dead.

The victim’s colleagues, who testified as witnesses in the case, said they had often seen bruises on her body which indicated that she was subjected to violence. “She used to spend her entire earnings on the family as she was the only earner.”
