Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz has been shot and wounded as he was drove through the capital Nouakchott but his life is not in danger, a security source told AFP.

Abdel Aziz was hit, yesterday, in the arm by a bullet that a motorist fired at him as he was driving towards Tweila, around 40 kilometres north of the capital, said the source.

The president was "slightly wounded in the arm by a bullet, fired at him by a motorist who targetted him directly as he was driving his car," the source said.

The president heads for Tweila most weekends, he added.
The president's "life is not in danger, he got out and walked to a military hospital where he received first aid," the source said.

The hospital was placed under high surveillance by the presidential guard.
There was no immediate indication of who the attacker might be or the motive for the shooting and whether he acted alone.
