Rangaswamy is acting VC of BU

N Rangaswamy, Dean of Faculty of Arts, Bangalore University has been appointed as the acting vice-chancellor of the varsity with effect from October 16, 2012.

Rangaswamy will hold the position until his term as dean is completed, or, until a new vice-chancellor is appointed under Section 14 (4) of the Karnataka State Universities Act, 2000, whichever is earlier.

Meanwhile, the governor’s office has accepted Prabhu Dev’s resignation to the vice-chancellor’s post. In a press statement issued on Tuesday, the office of the governor stated that the resignation of Prabhu Dev had been accepted by H R Bhardwaj, Chancellor of the University.

When asked about immediate measures he would take as the in-charge vice-chancellor, Rangaswamy said he had not yet received any official communication in this regard, and would be able to comment only after that.

Rangaswamy said he would prominently concentrate on research activities in the university and would see to it that the professors contributed to international journals. “I will call a meeting of all the stakeholders and chalk out a plan of action after seeking their opinion,” he added.

Yet to hand over charge

Meanwhile, Prabhu Dev said he would take a couple of days to take over as the chairperson of Karnataka Health Systems Commission, since he was yet to hand over the charge as the vice-chancellor.

Members of the Bangalore University Teachers’ Council (BUTC) said that they were happy that Prabhu Dev’s resignation had been accepted by the Governor.

BUTC executive member Nandini said the teaching staff, in particular, were looking forward to a vice-chancellor who would take them into confidence.

“We need someone who will respect the teaching community and interact with us,” she said. Members said they would prefer an academician for the post as he or she alone would understand the ground realities and the problems of the students, non-teaching staff and all others involved.

The Council members told Deccan Herald that Rangaswamy had vast experience in academics and in administration, and would be able to guide the university well during his tenure.
