MSF boost for sports

With an eye on improving the state of sports in Karnataka, a handful of big wigs joint hands to launch the Malleswaram Sports Foundation here on Friday.

At what seemed like a large political gathering, some of the biggest names in sports from the State were present for the occasion at the Malleswaram Association.

Deputy chief minister R Ashoka, Malleswaram MLA Dr CN Ashwathnarayan and former India cricketer Brijesh Patel were among those who graced the stage to unveil the foundation’s plans.

“We wanted to channelise the way sport is approached in our State and hence we came up with this foundation,” said Aswathnarayan, who is also the director of MSF. “We will focus all our energy on helping athletes come up. Another thing we want to do is build more playgrounds to help children take up sports.”

The foundation’s motto is ‘Take Sports For Life’. Apart from gifting Paralympics silver medallist HN Girisha with a car, MSF also felicitated para badminton player B Anand Kumar with Rs 1 lakh, while also honouring several other athletes.

Others felicitated: Manikantan (mountain climbing); Y Venkatesh (dwarf Olympics); Kashyap Ashok (tennis); G Dilip (basketball); BS Gautham (basketball); Sachin Belvadi (basketball); Pramila Ayappa (athletics); Honnappa (kabaddi); Ravi Raju (basketball), SR Bharath (basketball).
