Odisha govt failed to ensure justice to riot victims: SC

The Supreme Court on Friday sought a response from the Odisha government on a petition seeking transfer of the probe over 2008 Kandhamal riots cases to the CBI, alleging that state machinery had failed to ensure justice to the victims.

A bench of Justices R M Lodha and A R Dave gave eight weeks to the state government as well as to state and Kandhamal district police chief to furnish their reply on the petition filed by NGO Initiative to Justice, Peace and Human Rights and others.

The petition filed by Andleeb Naqvi and Kaushik Dey also wanted a direction from the apex court to set up an Inquiry Committee to look into alleged complacency of the state government before and after the riots, alleging investigation was “dishonest”.

According to the petition, about 123 poorest of the poor and innocent persons lost their lives in the widespread arson, looting, destruction of property in the communal violence in Kandhamal in August 2008.
