Excited about the festival

Upbeat Affair

Gujarati patchwork lamps and chants of the Vishnu Sahastranamam greeted students and parents as they entered Maharani Lakshmi Ammani College at Malleswaram.

The hustle and bustle on the campus was not just for the examinations, which are around the corner — it was also for the ongoing Dasara festival.

The stage was a sight as it had been decorated with dolls, which depicted various mythological stories.

The students were excited and actively took part in the festivities. “We celebrate all the festivals on campus but this is the first time that the students have brought dolls. We have various kinds of dolls on stage.

Students and teachers can bring prasad from their homes and distribute it among their friends and teachers if they want. Parents have also been invited to the festival and we have had many of them coming to the campus,” informs Rekha, the president of the college union.

The students were really upbeat about the dandiya festival, a day-long affair planned by the college. “All of us, from the students’ union, are taking part in the dandiya festival — even the teachers will be a part of it. We will wear traditional clothes like saris, cholis and lehengas,” notes Faiza, a final-year student.

The first-year students were also excited about the festive atmosphere in the
college. “I don’t think any other college has organised such a programme. We never expected that the festival would be celebrated on such a large scale in the college. It spreads awareness about our culture and students from other states can see how we celebrate this festival,” says Mahima, one of the students.

Sneha, another first-year student, was thrilled about the event and making plans for it.
“I am preparing for the festival and have planned to wear a sari. Though we have exams, we are still taking out time to help our seniors and be involved,” she adds.
