Asking people from all sections of the society to protest against the recent rape cases in the city, social activist and litterateur Mahasweta Devi on Saturday said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee should rise to the occasion.
“Everyone in the city including Mamata Banerjee should look at reality.... She should rise up to the occasion,” Mahasweta Devi told reporters at a function here. When asked to comment on the recent rape cases, the Magsaysay awardee said, “It is very unfortunate.
People should raise their voice and there should be protests from all sections of the society”.
On the chief minister’s criticism of the media for highlighting rape cases, she said, “I don’t agree to that. No one will”.
The author said a lot of improvement was needed on the law and order front in the state.
