At the end of every Ramlila, the demon Ravana is killed by Lord Rama, symbolising the victory of good over evil. But a Ramlila in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad district had almost a different ending.

Organisers faced a piquant situation, when a person playing the role of Ravana refused to get killed. Lord Rama was showering arrows on him but he stood his ground despite being told repeatedly from the back stage to fall on the ground. As the Ravana continued to stand firm amidst the raining arrows, audience started getting restless. The organisers, fearing a ruckus, called in police. Police were surprised to know the reason prompting Ravana to
refuse to ‘die’. He had not been paid wages by the organisers.

He had made it clear to them that he would not ‘die’ until paid in full. “The Ramlila will come to an end with my death and thereafter there is no guarantee that I will get my wages. So I have decided not to die unless the organisers pay me,” the artiste told police. The organisers admitted that they had not been able to pay the artistes their dues. Police assured him that he would be paid after the act and he ‘died’ happily.
