Three held for cricket betting

Three persons were arrested for cricket betting in north Delhi during the match between Highveld Lions and Sydney Sixers in Champions League T20 2012, police said.

Police received a tip-off that a betting syndicate was operating during Champions League T20 2012 cricket match between Highveld Lions and Sydney Sixers at a shop in Lahori Gate in north Delhi on Sunday.

A raid was conducted and Rajesh Gupta of Rohini, Mohammad Yameen of Lahori Gate and Gopi Kishan of  Subzi Mandi were apprehended in the shop.

They told police that they used a mobile phone via Voice Hot Line Box for receiving the rates, and other mobile phones for accepting bets.

“The match summary report of total betting till the time of the raid was found to be more than Rs 5 lakh. During Champions League, they had gambled more than Rs 55 lakh in the
earlier matches of the series,” said deputy commissioner of police (north) Sindhu Pillai.

Police said they also found that few more people were involved in the betting. “A hunt is on to nab them,” she said.
