Gujarat BJP meets to finalise poll candidates

The Gujarat BJP, which started its five-day meeting near Gandhinagar on Tuesday, is all set to finalise the candidates for the ensuing Assembly elections.

The Parliamentary Board meeting will decide upon the candidates for at least 29 Assembly constituencies spread across Bharuch, Navsari, Dang, Valsad, Tapi, Surendranagar and Ahmedabad Districts.

Chief Minister Narendra Modi, BJP national vice-president Purushottam Rupala, BJP national organisational secretary V Satish and former Gujarat MoS Home Amit Shah apart from the senior leaders of the state will attend the meeting.

The BJP is facing the problem of plenty in selection of candidate as more than 2,500 candidates are vying for party tickets for 182 seats. The selectors have a tough job as almost all the candidates in the queue have their roots spread across their communities. BJP leaders said balancing the caste equations and ensuring that the selection process does not in anyway benefit the newly found GPP will be a daunting task.

On his part, Narendra Modi has been so far successful in balancing anti-incumbency with his no repeat formula and it is expected that a large number of the sitting MLAs may not be given the party ticket this time. “It is largely the imprint of the MLA among his electorate and has capability to win the polls that would finally seal their fates,” said a BJP leader.
