Frustrated with unfulfilled promises of marriage by her employer, a 20-year-old girl attempted suicide by consuming mosquito repellent on Sunday.
She was sexually exploited by the accused for around a year and recently threatened by his father. The victim is a resident of south-east Delhi’s Badarpur and works at a beauty parlour. She was rushed to AIIMS by her father after she consumed mosquito repellent.
After doctors declared her out of danger, she told police that her employer Tanvir, who is married and lives with family at Molarband Extention, befriended her and even promised marriage.
Tanvir then started having physical relations with her, forcing her to undergo abortion twice.
Six months ago, when the victim had a marriage offer from someone else, she rejected it as Tanvir had promised to marry her.
On October 21, Tanvir took her to Shimla on the pretext of marrying her and continued their physical relations.
After returning home on Friday, she approached Tanvir’s father Rashid. He went to her home on Sunday and threatned to kill her.
Disappointed, the victim consumed mosquito repellent and tried to end her life. Tanvir and Rashid were arrested on Monday after a case of rape and exploitation against Tanvir and another case of threatening to murder against Rashid were registered on the girl’s statement.
Woman dies in hospital
A married woman died under mysterious circumstances during treatment in Safdarjung Hospital on Monday night. Her family members alleged that she was made to consume a poisonous substance by her husband, leading to her death.
Minakshi, 22, married Sanjay five years ago and was living with him in Delhi Cantonment in south-west Delhi. Her mother, Usha, told police that on Monday afternoon Minakshi reached office in an autorickshaw, screaming that she was unable to see anything.
Finding her daughter unwell, Usha, who also works in the same office, rushed her to a government hospital.
Minakshi told Usha that she felt unwell immediately after her husband offered her a cold drink, Usha said.
“She then rushed to meet her mother,” said a senior police officer, quoting Usha.
“When Minakshi’s condition deteriorated, her mother rushed her to Safdarjung Hospital, where she died at night while undergoing treatment,” said the officer.
A sub-divisional magistrate probe has been launched into the matter, and police have filed a case under section 304B (dowry death) against Sanjay with Delhi Cantonment police station.
