All 302 undertrials shifted to new jail in Mangalore

The new building constructed in the Mangalore district jail premises which was left unused for years now, has been finally put to use with the shifting of 302 undertrials from the old building to the new building on Wednesday.

The shifting activity which started in the morning under the tight police security, was
completed by evening. Speaking to Deccan Herald, Mangalore Jail Superintendent P S Ambekar said that the shifting was done peacefully and no untoward incident occurred during the shifting exercise.

“We have accommodated all the 302 undertrials to the new building which has the capacity to accommodate 400 people. The old building which is vacant at present will be utilised for other purposes based on the direction from the higher authorities which we are yet to receive,” he said.

Ambekar transferred

In the backdrop of the clash among undertrials in the district jail on the day of Bakrid on Friday, the Prison Department has transfered Mangalore Jail Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent of Prisons P S Ambekar to Udupi.

Assistant Superintendent of Police from Tumkur Doddakamaiah will replace Ambekar. The department has also placed warden Puttanachari on suspension for dereliction of duty, following the clash incident in which the warden himself had suffered injuries.
