This was announced by Praveen Sood, Addl Commissioner of Police (Traffic and Security), here on Monday. Inaugurating an ‘Enterprise Command Centre’ (ECC) of Central Parking Solutions, a City-based private parking solutions provider, Sood said the SMS facility will be connected/networked from the ECC to the Traffic Management Centre (TMC) of the City police where motorists will simply have to SMS and get info on parking slots available. This facility would be operational in a month’s time.

At present parking updates in two City malls are available on the website of the traffic police at: www.bangaloretrafficpolice.gov.in and would be updated to include ten more in a week’s time.

“There exists huge potential for investment in parking space in a vehicle congested City such as Bangalore, where private players could be involved in a big way. Bangalore currently has a lowest road to land ratio when it comes to mobility of vehicles. The City has a mentionable traffic and parking problem. Both are interrelated. What is being experienced here is a reduction in road space by 25 percent, as vehicle parking continues to occupy space on roads” Sood observed.

Calling for creation of private infrastructure for parking, the Addl Commissioner said gone are the days when only the government or civic bodies used to come forward to create parking related infrastructure. “Involvement of private players with a professional approach and technology to establish parking lots is the need of the hour. Parking enforcement becomes effective only when you have space”  Sood said and added that with 35 lakh vehicles plying on the roads, vehicle parking at present is insufficient.
