The best of North and South

It’s hard to find a restaurant that serves a wide variety of both South Indian as well as North Indian food. It’s even rarer to find delicious food and large quantities of it at reasonable prices. For such a culinary experience, Pai Vihar, located at the end of Miller’s Road, Vasanthnagar, is definitely worth visiting.

From a hot plate of idli-vada for Rs 16 or rava onion dosa to the poori sagu and chow chow bath for Rs 30, there is more than enough for the South Indian craving. For a light snack, one can choose from chaats like pakodi bhel, dahi kachori or the dahi papdi chaat to a filling plate of pav bhaji or even grilled sandwiches. There are also a few Chinese dishes like paneer manchuri, mushroom fried rice and noodles, all of which come within the Rs 50 umbrella.

Started 38 years ago, it is run by Pradeep Pai, the son of the founder. “Everything sells – the North Indian, South Indian and of course, the coffee,” says Pradeep with a smile.
“Over the years, the place has undergone renovation, items on the menu have changed and we’ve even added lodging above the restaurant. Things have certainly changed. But the essence of the place is still how it was when it started. It’s just getting better with each passing day,” he adds.

There is always a huge rush at the restaurant, ranging from the office-goers and IT professionals to families coming in and ordering 10 different items. The good part is that the kitchen is always running and the wait for the food never seems too long.
For a first-timer visiting the eatery, the North Indian rotis are a must try.

Along with a paneer butter masala or a bowl of yellow dal, the fresh and crispy breads are a delight in the mouth. The vegetable biryani for a mere price of Rs 38 is also worth a try.

Adjoining the restaurant is a juice bar, which also comes under the banner of Pai Vihar. If the filter coffee isn’t what you desire, the pudina lime fresh or sapota milkshake or just a glass of chilled butter milk should do the trick! If none of this appeal, settle for a hot cup of ‘Bournvita’. It’s a place where you are spoilt for choice, without burning a hole in your pocket.
