Lokayuktas must have freedom to work: Judge

A Supreme Court judge on Sunday said that the legal fraternity should avoid interfering with the functioning of Lokayuktas, as the office of the ombudsman has emerged as the important institution to prevent corruption and provide good governance. 

“The need of the hour is that a vibrant institution of Lokayuktas in the country. Lokayuktas should strive the government to good governance through awareness,” Justice Madan B Lokur said, addressing the concluding session of 11th All India Lokayuktas conference.

“Legal fraternity should not interfere with the functioning of the Lokayuktas otherwise, good governance would take a back seat,” he said, adding that effective exercise of existing provisions of the statute could achieve a lot.

Meanwhile, state Lokayuktas demanded that the stricter powers like search and seizure and contempt be vested in the office of ombudsman.
