To our children with love

Children’s Day heralds a lot of good cheer, fun, goodies, games and laughter. In school, a programme is formally chalked out at the beginning of the year itself.  But what about celebrations at home? A majority of us conveniently forget it unless there is a community get-together or a children’s party or a competition where, again, the parents vie with one another to bag a prize (often ignoring the child’s discomfort!) Once a child enters high school, Children’s Day is not taken into account at all.

While our children are in our care, can’t we, as parents give them a little surprise on Children’s Day? The reward of watching that adorable smile on their faces, is all ours to savour!

* Decorate the child’s room (when he or she is asleep) with streamers, balloons, festoons, flowers, chimes. If one plans ahead and keeps the decorative items ready at hand, work can be completed faster

* As soon as your child wakes up, he /she will be thrilled to pull out a peek-a-boo gift from under the pillow or cushion

* Imagine the squeals of delight when a short message, wishing them, is read. It can be hung on the mirror, bathroom door or tooth brush holder

* At the dining table, watch the fun as small gifts are unearthed — under the plate, in the tumbler, in their mug or porridge bowl

* Experience the delight, as a collage, made by parents or grandparents, is unfolded. Old snapshots, drawings, sketches can be used to make up a wall paper

* Organise a party for children, having an adult don the role of a clown or magician or DJ

* Let children be spectators to a spectacular show of theatricals or puppet show, planned out by parents

* Conduct funny one/two minute games for your children where some elders too can participate for more fun

* Narrate a humorous story using masks, facial and hand gestures, props, etc

*  Conduct a quiz for senior children about their family

* Wrap up with a group song, dance, and with a promise that more surprises will follow in the days to come
