Priyanka takes charge in mom's turf

Priyanka Gandhi’s two-day visit to Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s Lok Sabha constituency of Raebareli and her meeting with a large number of village-level Congressmen signaled that she has virtually taken charge of her mother’s turf.

Priyanka, whose visit concluded on Friday concentrated mainly on rejuvenating the party at the booth level and involving workers at the grassroot level. She made it clear that she would like to have a “direct dialogue” with them rather than through some intermediary.

The star campaigner has decided to appoint her representatives at the block level. “The block representatives will be visiting the villages under their respective blocks, listen to the problems of the people and then submit their reports to Priyanka,” said a local Congress leader.

There would also be a team of about 15 Congress workers at the Nyaya panchayat level. “These workers will also be apprising Priyanka about the problems of the people,” the leaders said, adding that these they would be given identity cards. “These identity cards will be sufficient to meet Priyanka or Sonia Gandhi,” they said.

The leaders said that accessibility of Sonia had been a major issue for the Congress workers in Reabareli.

“The ordinary workers are always left in the lurch,” they pointed out.
