Udupi dist records 2,031 criminal cases this year

However, 1,261 cases have been solved till Oct 31, says SP

 The most acknowledged literate district in the state, Udupi, has recorded 2031 crime cases charged under various IPC sections during the current year till October 31 as on police record and is no far behind on the violence scale.

The crime statistics is an indicator of the fact that the coastal district of the state has accounted for the similar average crime ratio since 2010.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Udupi In-charge SP Abhishek Goyal said of the 2031 cases that were registered in Udupi district, as many as 1,261 have been solved till October 31, he added.

The number of crime cases registered in the year 2010 was 2,699, of which 2,194 have been solved. Around 963 persons have been convicted and 390 persons have been acquitted. The investigation of about 841 cases are pending, while 263 are under investigation. As many as 263 cases are yet to be solved.

During this year, the majority cases were charged under IPC Sections 279 (rash riding), 337 (causing hurt by act of endangering life or personal safety of others) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act of endangering life or personal safety of others) and the number is around 1078. In the year, the hurt cases went up to 316.

The number of murder cases that were reported was 15 and 18 attempt to murder cases have been reported. The other cases registered under SC/ST Atrocity Act, Cow Slaughter Act, Arms Act, Gambling, Dowry harassment, 107 CRPC, and Forest Act which are not charged under IPC Sections accounted to 1304. However these cases also do come under cognizable offences.

In 2011, the number of cases that were registered were 2,578, of which, 2,194 were solved. The number of cases booked under IPC sections 279, 337 and 338 accounted to 1,035.  As many as 22 murder cases were recorded and around 27 professional robbery cases were reported. When compared to the number of rape cases that were registered in 2010 and 2011, as many as 5 rape cases were reported in 2011 as against 12 in 2010. Around 99 rioting cases were reported in 2011.

The number of other cognizable offences booked under various other acts numbered 792 and is very much less when compared to that of 2010. Nearly 164 cases were reported under IPC 304 (A) (causing death by negligence).

In 2011 till October 31, around 347 persons were convicted and trials of as many as 765 cases are pending. As many as 889 cases were charge sheeted under SIT Act, various sections under Security Acts, NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act) Act, Explosive Act, Arms Act and others. The number of murder cases that are reported are 13, while 27 robbery cases are registered. As many as 56 cases remained undetected and 724 are under investigation. Around 47 cases are acquitted. The highest numbers of murders were recorded in the district in 2011 that accounted to 22.

The ordinary theft cases are around 81 in 2012 till October 31 in comparison with 107 and 134 in 2010 and 2011 respectively. It is heartening to note that there was high decline in women harassment and molestation cases down the years and nil cases were reported under the category of eve teasing and dowry harassment and dowry death this year.

Around five rape cases are reported as against the 12 in 2010. There were around 24 and 86 HBT Day and HBT Night cases in 2012. As many as 858 cases booked under IPC sections 279, 337 and 338.

A glance at the crime statistics that were reported in the last two years and during the current year will certainly compel any literate mind to absorb into the thoughts inquiring over how safe is this coastal district, with mere three taluks in terms of crime free atmosphere.
