Youth held for mother's murder; another for friend's

 Vijaynagar police have cracked the murder case of a woman by arresting the victim’s son recently at Hyderabad.

Alphonso, a retired teacher and a resident of eighth cross at Hebbal second stage in the city, was found dead at her house on October 1. The body was in a highly decomposed state and the house had been ransacked. Acting on the clues, the investigators zeroed in on Anthony Monish, son of the deceased. The mother and son had differences of opinion over his impending marriage with his lover. A few days into his mother’s death, Anthony had visited her.

When the police traced him at his lover’s house in Hyderabad, Anthony confessed to have strangled his mother to death, besides robbing her ATM card, cellphone and also gold chain. He had also drawn Rs 50,000 using the ATM card.The police team was led by inspector B R Lingappa, consisting of SI B S Prakash and others.

A man who had hacked his friend to death for the lure of money has been arrested by Nanjangud police. Karuna Kumar alias Kumar, a resident of Hejjige village in Nanjangud taluk, is the accused, superintendent of police R Dileep told media here on Friday.

Kumar had convinced his friend Vedamurthy of neighbouring Sindhuvalli to secure a contract for a petrol bunk in Nanjangud. Unaware of the fate to befall on him, Vedamurthy along with a cheque for Rs six lakh went to meet his friend on October 17 — only to meet a brutal end.

Kumar who took his friend to a bar made him drink and later smashed his head with a boulder. Kumar later encashed the cheque and withdrew Rs 95,000 from a bank in Bangalore. He also tried to assault Vedamurthy’s wife Kavita. The police team consisted of inspector G S Raghu and supervised by Dy SP S G Vijaykumar.

Fraudster

Lakshmipuram police have arrested a man on charges of duping private finance firms of several lakhs of rupees by pledging gold-plated ornaments. M Manohar, a resident of Gayatripuram in the city, is the accused. He had pawned the gimcrack ornaments and had secured a total of Rs three lakh from two firms. Following a complaint, police led by inspector Sooryanarayan Rao arrested him.
