Last Updated 10 November 2012, 18:19 IST

Nearly 40 people including policemen were injured in a group clash between two communities following a heated argument over the Ganapathi idol immersion procession on Friday night.

The procession of Prasanna Ganapathi idol reached the Huliyaru road at 11.45 pm. A particular community opposed the passing of the procession on that route.

A heated argument followed between the members of the two communities. Even as  they defied the other community and tried to take the procession on the same route, empty bottles and stones were thrown to stop the procession.

Realising that the situation was getting out of hand the police resorted to lathi charge and dispersed the crowd.

As a result of throwing of bottles and stones, nearly 40 persons suffered minor injuries. Many of the injured were policemen themselves.

On Saturday morning a peace meeting was called to pacify both the communities. However, it failed to broker peace as the heated arguments continued. Tense situation prevails in the area now.
