Last Updated 11 November 2012, 18:59 IST

Children’s Day will be celebrated on November 15 in all schools of Karnataka, instead of November 14, which coincides with the Deepavali festival.

Intimations have been sent to all the schools in this regard, said Primary and Secondary Education Minister Vishveshwara Hegde Kageri.

He was speaking after offering floral tributes to the portrait of the country’s first education minister Moulana Abul Kalam Azad on the occasion of his birth anniversary, observed as National Education Day, at the Marikamba Government Secondary School here on Sunday.

It is not proper to postpone the birth anniversary of former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru on November 14, celebrated as Children’s Day. But, with children taking part in the festival of lights with greater enthusiasm, Children’s Day has been postponed to November 15, the minister said.

On the same day, schools will hold drawing competitions and other events for children, he said.

He advised students to shun crackers as they cause harm to the environment.  There are chances of people being injured due to the bursting of crackers, he said.

Taluk Panchayat president Gurupad Hegde, Zilla Panchayat members Shobha Naik, Usha Hegde and Deputy Director of Public Instruction (Sirsi Education District) M S Prasannakumar were present.
