A businessman was robbed of Rs 22 lakh by two motorcycle-borne men in the busy Central Market in Lajpat Nagar on Sunday. Despite tight security ahead of Diwali, the robbers also fired a round in the air to scare the victim after he showed resistance.

Rajesh Kumar lives with his family at Lajpat Nagar Part-2 and runs a garment shop and foreign exchange office at Central Market in the area. He told police that he was carrying Rs 22 lakh, including Rs 14 lakh in foreign currency, when the incident took place at 10.25 am.

“The victim was travelling on his scooter to his foreign exchange office when two motorcycle-borne assailants intercepted his vehicle outside a residential colony in Lajpat Nagar Part-2,” a police official said.

The accused got into an argument with Rajesh as they alleged that his scooter had brushed past their motorcycle. They forced him to stop his vehicle on the roadside. The duo then started abusing Rajesh and suddenly one of them snatched his bag. Rajesh claims that when the accused tried to flee, he managed to push them on the ground. Sensing that Rajesh may foil their robbery bid, one of the motorcyclists took out chilly power from his pocket and threw it into his eyes.

But Rajesh continued his struggle with the robbers. In a last ditch attempt, the accused opened fire in the air, after which Rajesh backtracked.
