Near-miss at Lucknow airport

Last Updated 13 November 2012, 19:48 IST

Around 200 passengers aboard an Indigo plane from Mumbai had a narrow escape when the aircraft aborted landing at the Lucknow airport just in time to avert a collision with a chopper which was too close for comfort.

The incident occurred on Monday evening when the Indigo plane carrying 188 passengers was about to land at the airport.

According to airport officials, an Uttar Pradesh government chopper was also trying to land around the same time. The Indigo pilot spotted the chopper, which was too close, in the nick of time and reported it to the air traffic control. He was told to abort landing and go around.

Officials said, the chopper was asked to land after the aircraft but it did not follow instructions. By the time the pilot spotted the chopper, it had come within 500 feet of the plane, sources said.

An investigation has been ordered, officials said. It was not clear who were on board the state government chopper.
