BJP leader tonsures woman priest in UP

A BJP leader allegedly tonsured a woman priest of a temple in Uttar Pradesh’s Ambedkar Nagar district, about 200 km from here, and grabbed the temple of which she was the caretaker and its properties after she refused to leave the temple as directed by him.

The priest Bachhi Das alias Rajpati Devi, who had been looking after the temple for the past ten years, has lodged a written complaint with the district police chief and other senior officials seeking action against the culprits.

The saffron leader Om Prakash Goswami, a resident of Chiuntipar village in the district, allegedly forcibly entered the temple at night a few days back along with his goons. They tonsured the priest, who was alone there and then held her hostage in a room inside the temple premises for several days. The priest managed to escape from the clutches of her tormentors on Monday with the help of some local villagers and reported the matter to the police before approaching the senior district officials, reports said.

She said in her complaint that Goswami had been threatening her for the past several months and asking her to leave the temple.
