BJP leader tonsures woman priest in UP

Temple property allegedly grabbed, cops begin probe

A BJP leader has allegedly tonsured a woman priest in Uttar Pradesh’s Ambedkar Nagar district and grabbed the temple and its properties of which she was the caretaker after she refused to vacate it.

Bachhi Das alias Rajpati Devi, who had been looking after the temple for the past 10 years, filed a complaint with the district police chief and other senior officials seeking action against the culprits.

The BJP leader Om Prakash Goswami, a resident of Chiuntipar village, allegedly entered the temple at night with his goons, a few days ago.

They tonsured the priest, who was alone there and held her hostage in a room on the temple premises for many days.

On Monday, with the help of some villagers, the priest managed to escape from their  clutches and reported the matter to police.

She said Goswami had been threatening her for the past several months and forcing her to vacate the temple, she added.

The temple is famous in the area and it has huge properties in the form of land. A large number of devotees pay obeisance at the temple during religious congregations and other auspicious days.

According to police sources, Goswami was aided by some history sheeters and known criminals.

The priest was allegedly thrashed by the leader and his goons.

“Goswami was after the temple property. He threatened to get me killed, if I did not leave the temple,” she said.

The incident has triggered tension in the area and the locals have warned of an agitation, if the perpetrators were not acted against immediately. Police said a case has been registered and the matter is being investigated.
