KSRTC, which is basking in the joy of launching intelligent road transport system (IRTS) in the city, has plans to replicate the system across the state.

Deputy chief minister R Ashoka who also holds transport and home portfolios said the city bus services earlier restricted only for Mysore and Bangalore is also launched at Mandya, Gulbarga and Tumkur. Mangalore is in the pipeline.

Unlike earlier years, the city bus services has gone under total revamping with the introduction of Volvo buses; both low floor and semi-low floor. The target is from common man to IT professional, the minister added. The initiative is also yielding good results with KSRTC winning 60 awards including national and international.

Profit

Drawing an analogy between KSRTC and the similar system in other states, Ashoka said, it’s only in Karnataka, state transport corporation is running under profit. There is a fleet of 23,000 buses across the state and the profit rate is maintained for the last four years.

Tami Nadu has posted a loss of Rs 4,500 crore and Maharashtra Rs 1,500 crore. Rajasthan has partnered with private parties to keep the system alive.
Fuel lobby

Ashoka on Saturday alleged that fuel lobby is coming in the way of KSRTC’s plans to blend traditional fuel with non-conventional sources of energy. Claiming that the state is the first to run the buses on ethanol,  the minister said “buses at Doddaballapur are blend with honge”.

The minister said that he has written to Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar to give permission to convert more buses for non-conventional sources of energy. It seems the oil lobby is preventing the plans, the minister alleged.
