JOIN USAndanappa Yalagi, father of Savitha Halappanavar, has urged that there be an independent probe into his daughter’s death.
Savitha died of septicemia on October 28 at Galway in Ireland after Irish doctors allegedly turned down the couple’s request to terminate her 17-week pregnancy. “I do not hope to get justice, as the Ireland government is conducting the investigation,” Andanappa said.
The victim’s father has expressed doubts about a fair probe in the matter, as restrictive laws on medical termination of pregnancy is in force in Ireland. The possibility of the Ireland government providing a report in favour of the University Hospital in Galway is high, he noted.
In his letter to the President, prime minister and minister of external affairs, on Sunday, Andanappa Yalagi has urged that there be a Indian doctor in the investigating team.
Speaking to mediapersons in Belgaum on Sunday, Yalagi said that since the University Hospital in Galway and Department of Health in Ireland were conducting the probe, he did not expect a fair report. Thus, the Indian government should pressure Ireland for an impartial investigation. Yalagi also demanded that the Indian government treat Savita’s incident as a case of death caused by medical negligence and register it with the International Court of Justice. And thus bring the culprits to the book.
