In a swift action, police on Tuesday afternoon arrested one of the four under-trial prisoners who had escaped from the Kasargod sub-jail earlier in the day, after assaulting several members of the prison staff.

Members of the public spotted one of escapees, Mohammed Iqbal (32), who is accused in two murder cases, at a hotel near Manjeshwar around 9 am and tipped off the local police.

By the time police reached the hotel, Iqbal had escaped in an autorickshaw. The police were
later able to arrest him at his relative’s house in Manjeshwar.

The other escapees are Mohammed Rashid (32), Rajan (62) and Rajesh (35), all accused of conducting a series of chain-snatching robberies. They escaped from the prison along with Iqbal.

The police believe that the four men were able to escape by using a jeep and suspect the involvement of several of prison staff in the attempt.

Kasargod Superintendent of Police K Surendran, who visited the prison said that two special teams have been constituted to arrest the three men.

The teams have been told to search the district and its borders with Karnataka.Deputy Inspector-General of Prisons K Sivadasan also visited the jail.
