After ban, egg producers grapple with new woe

Wholesale rate at Rs 2.55 against Rs three in the winter season

Poultry farmers of the district who were heaving a sigh of relief after Kerala government lifted ban on eggs, are now grappling with another woe; fall in wholesale rate of eggs.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, M P Satish Babu, Mysore Zonal Chairman of National Egg Coordinating Committee (NECC) said following the lifting of ban on the late evening of November 19, the eggs are now being transported from November 20 to the god’s own country as Kerala is popularly known as among other States. This follows a declaration from the State government that ‘State is disease free zone’.

Though there were some initial hiccups, the eggs are now being sent to Kerala like before, but with a certificate issued by a veterinarian belonging to the department of animal husbandry.

Dr Prasad Murthy is currently issuing the certificates to the load from Mysore to Kerala, he said. There was a ban on eggs following the outbreak of bird flu in Central Poultry Breeding Farm, Hesarghatta in Bangalore.

Mysore district is the major supplier of eggs to Kerala from Karnataka with the daily  load in the range of 12 lakh. There are 62 poultry farms in the district. The irony here is the slump in the wholesale rate in contrary to the rate earlier in winter season in November and December considered as peak season for the traders.

The per piece of egg is sold at Rs 2.55 against Rs three. He attributed the dip in the rate to the bird flu fear among the consumers and the onset of Ayyappa season that begins in November. The ayyappa devotees shed non-vegetarian food as is the ritual till they pay their obeisance at the shrine.

As poultry rearing involves much expenditure the farmers are able to manage only when the prices are above Rs 3, he said. He exuded confidence that the rate may pick up with Christmas just a month away. The demand for eggs shoots higher during Christmas with bakeries needing huge quantity of the same to meet the requirements.
