A 52-year-old foreign exchange dealer was robbed of Rs 22 lakh at gunpoint by three motorcycle-borne assailants at south Delhi’s South Extension on Friday evening.

South Extension Part-2 B-Block resident Kamalchand Dekha also received head injuries as he was hit by one of the accused with a helmet when he tried to resist the robbery bid.

He is undergoing treatment at the AIIMS trauma centre. Hospital sources said he was under observation, but out of danger.

Police said Kamalchand runs Haritimas Forex, a money exchange outlet, at South Extension Part-2 E-Block, and was returning home when the incident took place at around 9.30 pm.

“He was walking towards his Honda Civic car after closing the outlet and had a bag containing Rs 22 lakh cash,” a police official said.

He kept his bag in the car and as he was trying to enter the car, a friend came and started chatting with him.

While he was chatting, two men then came and asked for the bag. Initially, he resisted the robbery attempt, after which a scuffle ensued. But when the robbers threatened him at gunpoint, he handed over the bag.

In a bid to save his life, Kamalchand ran from the spot and raised an alarm. As locals began to gather, the robbers escaped.

“The assailants fled with an associate who was waiting for them on a motorcycle some distance away,” the official added.

Police have started investigations after registering a case of robbery and attempt to murder with Hauz Khas police station.

“Prima facie it appears that the robbers were tipped off about the money Kamalchand was carrying. We suspect an insider’s role,” the official said.

His relatives, friends, staff, colleagues and foreign exchange dealers in the area are being questioned.

Police have also retrieved footage from CCTV cameras installed at the market.
“The footage shows a man doing a recce of the market. It also shows a person waiting on a motorcycle,” the official added.
