10,000 couples to tie the knot today

More than 10,000 couples in the capital will tie the knot on Sunday, and the number is expected to remain the same on Monday, owing to the auspicious three-day period that begins on Saturday.|

According to Ravindra Nagar, head priest at Birla Mandir in central Delhi, the Jupiter and the moon are in the appropriate houses on these three days. “Couples who get married during this period will stay together for the next seven births,” he said.

Over 10,000 weddings took place in the Capital on Saturday as well. According to municipal authorities, of the 235 banquets and community halls the civic bodies have in the city, a majority of them have been booked for weddings.

“Only the smaller ones are empty, while the rest have been booked for marriages,” said Yogendra Mann, spokesperson of North and East MCDs.

But he could not confirm the over 10,000 figure. Nagar said additional priests have been called in from Haridwar, Rishikesh and Varanasi to meet the rush. “I have to solemnise three weddings tonight (Saturday). It will be a hectic day,” said Anant Tripathi, a priest at Jhandewalan Hanuman Mandir in central Delhi.

The traffic police, anticipating jams, were on their toes. “As of now there are no major jams anywhere, but being a weekend we are prepared for everything,” said a traffic cop.
