Many new faces elected for Red Cross unit polls

Nine out of 10 elected persons are not doctors.

In a surprising move, many new faces have won the elections held for executive committee posts of the district unit of Indian Red Cross Society, here on Sunday.

Out of the 792 members, a total of 332 members exercised their franchise, out of which six polls were invalid. Though 28 persons had filed their nominations for 10 posts, two including Pilikula Nisarghadhama former Executive Director J R Lobo withdrew their nominations.

Out of the 26 persons who contested for the polls, Panambur Beach Development Corporation CEO Yatish Baikampady won maximum number of votes (243) followed by Dr Murali Mohan (204) and former banker Raveendranath K (196). Others who won include advocate Shashiraj Kavoor (161), B Prabhakar Sriyan (161), advocate Santhosh Peter D’Souza (139), Ajay Kumar (138), Athena Hospital Managing Director Raviraj Shettian (132) and Auto Drivers Union President B Vishnumurthy (126).

Most of the immediate past office-bearers including Rotary Governor Dr B Devdas Rai, former IMA president Dr K Mohandas Bhandary, Nagesh Kumar, advocate Raghavendra Rao, MRPL former DGM Santhosh Kumar Kadri, Scouts district commissioner N G Mohan and Indian Red Cross former chairman and Globe Travels Proprietor William Antony D’Souza failed to secure the required votes in the elections.

The new body will be in-charge for the next two years.District Co-operative Society Superintendent Janardhan conducted the polls.

Interestingly, nine out of 10 elected persons are not doctors. All these years, the district unit of Red Cross society was controlled by doctors.
