'Indifferent' commissioner blamed for failure of CMC

His attitude towards problems gives us a black mark, says President

City Municipal Council (CMC) president M V Bhaskar has accused Commissioner D H Raya of dereliction of duty, blaming him for an increase in the problems in the City.

The president also said the Commissioner was responsible for the Municipality’s failure to clear garbage and for a lack of amenities in the City.

Bhaskar, who addressed a press conference here on Monday, said inspection of and solution to the problems in the city wards were the responsibilities of the Commissioner.

Repeated requests

“The Municipality members have continuously urged the Commissioner to take action in relation to the various problems haunting the City, but he continues to take his own decisions and remains apathetic regarding the problems. The Municipality, however, is at the receiving end of his indifference in a way, as the citizens blame us for not solving the problems.”

The CMC is facing financial loss as vehicles have been purchased for disposal of waste, but have not been used. “Five auto tippers purchased for disposal of waste are already in bad shape. The tractor trailers and other vehicles are, however, perfectly serviceable, but not used. There is no shortage of funds to undertake a cleanliness campaign in the City, but the money is not utilised,” complained the president.

Unlicensed construction

“The wedding hall near Basappa Chhatra was built without any permission from the Municipality. The only permit was given by the Agalagurki Gram Panchayat, although the wedding hall is situated within administrative limits of the CMC,” he added.

“The people building the hall had submitted an application for tax verification. In response, the authorities had told them they would be given a permit from the CMC on payment of Rs 1.45 lakh. This is clearly against the law,” Bhaskar said.

“A wedding hall was closed for non-payment of tax. Why has there no action been taken against the hall near the Chhatra then?” he asked.

“We have written to the deputy commissioner about the Municipality commissioner’s negligence. A letter, along with a list of such acts of negligence, has also been submitted to the Municipal Administration Department. We have requested that strict action be taken against the Commissioner,” said Bhaskar.
