With a total prize money of Rs 8,20,000 on offer, the inaugural edition of the ambitious six-team Karnataka Volley League (KVL) is all set to kick off on Thursday at the Kodandaramapuram ground courts in Malleswaram.

State ‘A’ Division champions Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will take on Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) in the first match. Army Service Corps (ASC) will take on Life Insurance Corporation and Karnataka State Police (KSP) will play Madras Engineer Group (MEG) in the other matches of the day.

Since three outstation players, Indian or foreign, can be a part of the playing six, the event will not be short on the competitive front.

“Three each outstation players will play for MEG and ASC but we have not got confirmation of the names,’’ K Nandakumar, general secretary, Karnataka Volleyball Association (KVA) said.

Andhra lad and Indian junior team player Yeshwanth Kumar will be a part of the LIC team.
Youngsters Kabaddi Club, organisers of the first phase of the four-phase league, were optimistic about the preparations for the event.

“Ours is basically a kabaddi ground but we have readied the ground according to international volleyball standards,’’ Vishal, organising committee member, Youngsters Kabaddi Club said.

“We have a seating capacity of 2,500 but we’re expecting a crowd of around 2,000 and this is the third time we are organising a volleyball tournament here after the meets in 1992 and 2010 (both State-level),’’ Vishal added.
