Residents air contradictory views on girl's death

Residents of Hyathi, where a teenager who was allegedly gang-raped committed suicide, gave contradictory statements on the reasons for her death during the investigation by the police on Wednesday.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Suresh Masuti and his team visited the village and interrogated the victim’s uncle and neighbours. While the age of the victim, Hanumavva Doli, was mentioned as 19 in the case registered with the police, the residents claimed that she was a minor. While a few of them said Doli took the extreme step unable to bear acute stomach pain, others said she was upset because she was assigned work in the fields.

Deputy Commissioner Tulasi Maddineni said the post mortem was performed on the girl in Gadag and it would take two months for the report to arrive. SP B S Prakash said the investigation had been taken up based on media reports which said Doli committed suicide by consuming poison as a mobile phone clip of the gang-rape was circulated in village.
