Parliamentary board rejects demands

However the party has rejected their offers. In the Parliamentary Board meeting of the party held here on Saturday to discuss the results, both the leaders offered to resign, taking moral responsibility for the defeat. But the board rejected the offer.

As Advani became adamant that he would not continue in his post, the Board decided that a final view on the issue would be taken later, the party spokesman Arun Jaitely told reporters.  Senior leader Sushma Swaraj’s name is doing the rounds as the Leader of Opposition incase Advani sticks to his stand.

Meanwhile the BJP congratulated both Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi for the electoral victory.

“The BJP and its allies while acting as a constructive opposition will fully co-operate with the government in strengthening India, ” said the party in its statement. “The BJP accepts the mandate of the people of India with all humility. We shall do our utmost to honour the spirit of this mandate,” the statement said.
