Crib death toll mounts to 31, task force still defiant

Four more children died at the Malda College and Hospital here taking the total number of crib deaths to 31 since Saturday even as the Health Task Force claimed the situation was not alarming.

“The situation is not as alarming as it is made out in the media. The infrastructure at the Paediatric and the Sick Neonatal Care Unit in the hospital has improved,” said Dr Tridip Banerjee, chairman of the state appointed Health TaskForce.

Dr Banerjee and a member of the Task Force inspected the hospital and spoke to the superintendent, doctors and family members of the admitted children.  The Paediatric and the Sick Neonatal Care Unit has 46 and 22 beds respectively.

Most children who died were brought from North and South Dinajpur districts and neighbouring Jharkhand in a very critical condition. The cause of death was attributed to malnourishment, underweight and premature birth.
