'Literature, culture promotes fraternity'

Literature and culture promotes fraternity among people while destructive thoughts convert them into terrorists, said folk scholar Prof Kalegowda Nagavara.

Speaking after inaugurating the Murnadu hobli unit of Kannada Sahitya Parishat at Murnadu Kodava Samaja on Thursday, he said the destructive thoughts of human beings lead to war and violence, to end up with devastation.

Due to their ruinous thoughts, the countries are competing to create a war-like situation. People are dying with hunger in the countries which give more importance for the assimilation of weapons, he observed.

“India’s mind is cultured. Our democracy became stronger since it is based on the contributions made by Buddha, Basava, Gandhi, Ambedkar, Lohia, Vivekananda and other great souls,” he analysed.

“Kodavas had minds which were as beautiful as nature. For the same reason they inspired even Gandhi. Gandhiji made a reference to Kodagina Gowramma in his paper ‘Harijana’. The role of Kodagu is significant in freedom movement too. Untouchability originated after British stepped into Kodagu. One should remember litterateurs like Bharathisutha, Panje Mangesharaya, Kodagina Gowramma and Nadikeriyanda Chinnappa for fighting against this,” Prof Nagavara said. He emphasised on the need for promoting sensibilities and creativity among the younger generation.

In his address, Arameri Kalancheri Mutt seer Shanthamallikarjuna Swamiji said Kannada language has a good environment to grow in rural areas which should be safeguarded and promoted further.
The galloping of civilisation has affected the languages in rural areas too. The efforts to strengthen Kannada in the Kodagu-Kerala border areas through opening more units of KSP are laudable, he said.

‘Shakthi’ daily Chief Manager Chi Chidvilas said forgetting the mother tongue will directly affect one’s life.

Zilla Panchayat former president Deerghakeshi Shivanna, Taluk Panchayat President H S Subhashini spoke.

KSP District President T P Ramesh said two more hobli units will be coming up at Bhagamandala and Suntikoppa soon. The Madikeri taluk sahitya sammelan will be held at Napoklu this time, he informed.

Madikeri taluk KSP unit head K T Baby Mathew, Virajpet unit head B G Raghunath Nayak, Somwarpet unit head J C Shekhar were present. KSP Murnadu unit head Dr Mechira Subhash Nanaiah presided.
