Students Union rally past DYSS

Students Union FC scored a fine come-from-behind 2-1 victory over promoted Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) to kick-start their BDFA Super Division league campaign on a promising note here on Sunday.

Medio TK Sajesh equalised Santosh Kumar’s first-half goal for DYSS before Dinesh polised off a fine counter-attacking move ten minutes from time to wrap up a fighting victory at the Bangalore Football Stadium.

After taking some time to settle down, Students Union gained good rhythm as the match progressed past the half-hour mark, creating a couple of fine chances. However, their build-up play resulted in nothing, thanks to some fine defensive work and goalkeeping from DYSS.

Having held fort, DYSS then made Students Union pay following a defensive error in the 42nd minute. Suhas HW made hash of a routine clearance on the edge of the box and an alert Santosh stole the ball, dribbled past Avinash M before rounding up goalkeeper Sunil Kumar and slamming it home.

Post resumption too, Students Union created a handful of opportunities but kept squandering them. However, they finally drew level in the 72nd minute, thanks to a fine ball from L Herald. The medio sent a defence-splitting pass from the centre to the left to Sajesh, who then found the back of the net.

The winning goal was very similar to the first. This time, Pranay Thapa delivered the pass from the centre to the right and Dinesh completed the move with a neat strike.
BEL withdraws

Bharath Electronics Limited (BEL) pulled out from the ‘A’ Division league, turning it into a nine-team affair. BEL will thus be relegated to ‘B’ Division.

Meanwhile, Dhruva struck twice in quick succession (39th, 40th) as Jawahar Union defeated Bangalore Mars 2-1 in the opening ‘A Division fixture.

B Mani restored a semblance of pride for Mars with a last minute goal (80th).
