Parents lack awareness, says RTE Task Force

The fourth meeting of the Right to Education (RTE) task force was held on Sunday to clear the confusion on enforcement of RTE and extend a helping hand to worried parents.

Of late, RTE has become a bone of contention, between the government and the schools (State-run, aided and unaided).

“Many parents don’t know much about RTE,” said Lakshmi Prasanna, one of the members of the Task Force.

The occasion was marked by the release of a pamphlet with instructions on availing benefits of RTE and contact numbers of block education officers, deputy directors of public instruction and NGOs involved in the implementation of RTE.

The Task Force members revealed some disturbing trends caused due to misinformation and ignorance about RTE.

There have been cases in which three families moved to particular localities, to get their children admitted to schools which they thought were good for them, under the RTE quota, said Nagasimha G Rao, convener of the Task Force.

"Some parents who could not enrol their children under the 25 per cent quota in Class 1, enrolled them again in the same class, even though they had passed that class, causing a loss of an academic year,” said Prasanna.

The RTE Task Force comprises 132 members from NGOs, parents and teachers. The information pamphlets are available in any of the six centres of the Task Force.

Parents can get their doubts cleared or convey their grievances by contacting the heads in any of these centres.
