The engineering students and researchers at National Institute of Technology- Karnataka, Surathkal who often work on projects that have less relevance to the industrial requirements, will henceforth get an opportunity to work on the projects that are industry specific.

The student could put their talent and skills to test and come up with possible unique solutions to the problems that are faced by the software industry.

The Memorandum of Understanding which was signed between NITK and Dell on Friday, will not only help Dell to find feasible solutions to some of the problems faced by the company, but also will help the students to keep pace with the developments in software and hardware industries.

It is for the first time that Research and Development Centre of Dell computers-Indian unit has entered a tie-up with an educational institution to work in collaboration with students towards mitigating its problems.

Speaking to media persons after signing the MoU, Dell India R&D Centre Executive Director and Head Rudramani B, who is also the alumni of NIT-K, said that the company will initially place three specific problems before the students.

It includes, working on hardware to improve server category computers which are sensitive to the dust and humidity of the coastal region, load balancing and workload management in cloud computation and work on fixing loopholes in security technologies.

“We would expect the involvement of BTech, masters students and research scholars to work towards fixing problems under the guidance of lecturers and come up with cost-effective solutions.

The basic idea behind signing the MoU is to utilise the capabilities and technological knowledge of students which most often goes un-noticed,” he said.

Dell is hopeful of finding quite a lot of solutions to the problems during the three years term, before the validity of MoU expires.

NIT-K Director Swapan Bhattacharya said the MoU will help students to understand practical problems faced by the industry. With no proper research centres for students to explore their capabilities, the MoU will be of a great value as it will create a research atmosphere towards trouble-shooting the contemporary problems in the industry.

The departments of computers science, information technology, electrical and electronics, mechanical, electronics and communications will be initially involved in the Dell projects.
NIT-K also signed a MoU with UdupiTech on Thursday, towards working on joint design and development of several projects.
