Hospital bills drain out dog-bite victims

Last Updated 08 December 2012, 18:45 IST

Razia Sultana, 5, bitten by a stray dog in Nagashettyhalli last week, has been recommended to undergo a plastic surgery.

But her family is unable to bear the mounting medical expenses. Her father S Khan said: “Many dignitaries have visited and promised to bear the hospital expenses.

But till date, no one has done anything. We have also been told by the hospital authorities that Razia has to undergo a plastic surgery. I earn a meager Rs 150 a day and my wife doesn’t earn much. How can we pay for the costly treatment? The provision to provide financial aid to the victims of stray dog menace must be implemented at the earliest by the government.”

The hospital bill has gone up to Rs 30,000, but all that the victim has got is the local corporator’s assistance of Rs 5,000 some days ago, Khan told Deccan Herald.
The Palike provided assistance in administering anti-rabies vaccinations and other medicines, but did not reimburse other medical expenses, he added.

However, Dr Parviz Ahmad Piran, Joint Director of the Palike’s Animal Husbandry department, said he had apprised Mayor D Venkatesh Murthy and BBMP Commissioner Rajneesh Goel of the financial condition of Razia’s family.

“The officials have promised me that they will meet the medical expenses of the victim from their funds,” Dr Piran added.

Meanwhile, SP Jyoti, a resident of Jnanajyoti Nagar who was mauled by a dog two weeks ago, underwent plastic surgery on Friday. The financial condition of Jyoti’s family is no different from that of Razia’s.

Avinash Yadav K B, the husband of Jyoti, said he had spent over Rs one lakh for plastic surgery and medicines. “She has to undergo another minor surgery after three weeks.

It’s really becoming difficult for us to pay the hospital bills and I am meeting the expenses with the assistance of my relatives and friends.

In spite of meeting the corporator and writing to  the Mayor, we haven’t received any aid. We have been informed that the medical expenses will be reimbursed only after producing the hospital bills to the officials personally,” he said.
