Last Updated 09 December 2012, 17:17 IST

Raitha Sangha leader K S Puttannaiah on Sunday said that the indefinite hunger strike launched by G Madegowda, president of the Zilla Raitha Hitharakshana Samithi, had been withdrawn, following the assurance by the district administration on behalf of the government that water release to Tamil Nadu would be stopped after implementing the Supreme Court direction.

A total of 32,000 cusecs of water had been flown to the neighbouring state till Sunday and the flow would be stopped once the quantum of release reaches 50,000 cusecs, Puttannaiah said.

The future course of the agitation would depend on the outcome of the hearing of the case in the Supreme Court on December 10 (Monday), he said.

He was speaking to reporters during a protest by farmers at the Krishnarajasagar (KRS) reservoir, against the release of water. He said they had also withdrawn the protest for the time being, following the assurance.

Deputy Commissioner B N Krishnaiah said that the order of the apex court would be implemented and that the interests of the farmers would be protected.
