The President of Ukraine Victor Yanukovych, on Wednesday, expressed the need to strengthen ties between the two countries in the energy sector.

“We want to strengthen ties in the energy sector. Ukrainian companies have resources to provide assistance to India in the areas of nuclear, thermal, hydro, solar and wind energy, besides helping build energy infrastructure and plants.”

Yanukovych, who was addressing delegates at the India-Ukraine business summit organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here, added that Ukraine is interested in implementing joint projects with India in the development of gas turbine power plants as well.

Ukraine will also bid for providing equipment and services to India’s energy facilities, he added.

Trade between the two countries has crossed more that $300 billion in the last three years and Ukraine happens to be the second largest trade partner of India from the Commonwealth of Independence States (CIS), after Russia.

“Both the countries should aim for at least a two-fold increase in turnover, and India and Ukraine should focus more on sectors such as space research, aircraft manufacturing, ship-building, pharmaceuticals, mettalurgy and tourism,” he said.
