Shivram Karanth remembered

 
Delivering the presidential addresss at the 108th birth anniversary celebrations of eminent Kannada litterateur Dr Kota Shivarama Karantha organised by the Dakshina Kannada District Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Kalkura Prathistana and Sharada PU College at the Sharada Vidyalaya here on Saturday, Bhat said that the books written by Dr Karantha impart readers new ideas each time when they read it more than once. His books take readers to the world of knowledge, he added.

The road between Ambedkar Circle and Hampankatta was named after Dr Karantha to commemorate his contributions towards society, Bhat said and recalled that the road was renamed only after ovcercoming several political objections.

Speaking after receiving the ‘Karantha Award’, senior theatre artiste Sadananda Suvarna said that Dr Karantha was not a lover of publicity. “If he was alive today, he would not have allowed us to celebrate his birthday,” he opined. Dr Karantha’s contributions were not limited to literature. But at the same time, he had contributed immensely towards many other fields including environment, film, drama, publishing and science, he added.

Litterateurs Dr N Damodara Shetty, Nityananda Karantha, former State Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Harikrishna Punarooru, Tulunadu Education Trust President Prof M B Puranik, District Kannada Sahitya Parishat President Pradeep Kumar Kalkura and Sharada PU College Principal Dr Leela Upadhyaya were the guests.
